Aquaponic Farming Being Studied for Large-scale Agriculture
Aquaponic farming saves water, but can it feed the country?
Aquaponics is getting new attention because researchers are looking for ways to provide food for the country’s growing population. More farmers are looking into aquaponics and the technology is being studied for large scale agricultural production. Aquaponic systems use only about 10% of the water used with standard farming methods, but initial start-up costs can be greater. Scaling up aquaponics systems can also be difficult. Oroboros farms in California is one of the companies that are looking into large-scale aquaponic farming.
Aquaponics is a 1000 year old food production technology, but many are optimistic about it’s future place as the main source of food for the United States and other countries.
